Staunton Jams will bring music back to the Queen City this Saturday at noon. A free event, Staunton Jams began as a chance for families to visit and enjoy downtown.
“It’s really fun,” said Julie Markowitz executive director of the Staunton Downtown Development Association. “Fun to be outside because it’s starting to get really nice outside. It’s fun to hear the music. You can come out and listen and dance and see all your friends and neighbors out there. You can take little breaks and go shopping. It’s just nice to be downtown and participate.”
The portion of West Beverley Street, in front of Baja Bean and SunTrust Bank, that spans the block from North Central Avenue to North Augusta Street will be obstructed from through traffic. A stage will be assembled for the musical performances.
Eight bands will provide the soundtrack for this year’s Jams: Steal This Band, Nathan Moore, Lola Mullen, Square, The Downtown Conspiracy, Burnt Reynolds Band, Sun Dried Opossum and The Findells. All from the area, these performers play free of charge.
Participants will enjoy everything from alternative country and blue grass to modern rock and jam band tunes.
“We have such a wealth of talent here to choose from,” said Sarah Lynch event organizer. “We’re teaching a new generation of people to come downtown and enjoy being downtown and support downtown.”
This year’s Staunton Jams will offer something especially for teens who aspire to rock stardom, with the “Teen Rock Star” competition. Held from 2-5 p.m. at the Bookstack, teenagers 12-17 years old will have an opportunity to play the PlayStation 3 video game, “Rock Band” for prizes. On-site registration for the competition begins at 1 p.m. and is free. The Bookstack is located at 1 E. Beverley St. in Staunton.
WNRN, radio sponsor for this year’s event, will broadcast live from Staunton Jams on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The station will be giving away T-shirts and CDs. Large canvas bags, $15 for one and $25 for two, and refillable water bottles, $5, will be available for purchase. Funds will go to support Staunton Jams.
Staunton Jams will wrap up around 9:30 p.m.
