With little time to catch its breath after the Summer Music Festival, Wintergreen Performing Arts presents its Third Annual Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest on Saturday at the Evans Center. Headlining the festival will be Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group.
Robin and Linda entertained the Wintergreen audience in 2005 with their blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country music. The couple, who originally met in 1971, make their home in Middlebrook, just over the mountains in the Shenandoah Valley.
As half of The Hopeful Gospel Quartet, they have collaborated on several CDs with Garrison Keillor, and were prominently featured in the 2006 film “A Prairie Home Companion,” directed by master filmmaker Robert Altman.
Also returning to the Wintergreen Mountain Music Fest are The Deer Creek Boys, a young band from the local bluegrass circuit. They performed at the inaugural Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest. In 2007 they won first place in the Bluegrass Band competition at the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention.
Three of the members, Cason Ogden (mandolin), Justin Tomlin (guitar), and Jason Tomlin (bass), have been together since the spring of 1999.
Justin, a 2005 graduate of Amherst County High School, attends Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, studying business management and also works at Poplar Grove Golf Course.
Jason graduated from Amherst County High School this June and plans to attend Central Virginia Community College. He works at Winton Country Club.
Ogden is a 2005 graduate of Amherst County High School and attends Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, working toward an associates degree in forestry technology.
David Carroll is the mature guy in the group. He lives in Bath County and joined DCB in June of 2003.
Rounding out the daylong schedule — music begins at 11 a.m. and goes to 7 p.m. — will be old time groups The McKenzies and Kim and Jimbo Cary, and The Company Store along with the bluegrass group, The Courtney Hollow Band.
Visit the Wintergreen Performing Arts Web site at http://www.wintergreenperformingarts.org for a schedule and more information on the performers.
