The adult programs at Waynesboro Public Library have followed the library’s mission statement goal of serving patrons of all ages, providing needed information, education, and recreational resources for all ages.  Our “Senior Celebration Day,” which began on Oct. 20, 2006, was developed along those guidelines.  It was the most ambitious adult program to date as the “day” involved three hours of programming, headlined by a Senior Fashion Show with models recruited from library volunteers, the board of directors and staff. This beginning was a great success with approximately 78 in attendance.  Since that first “Senior Day,” the library has organized and hosted fall and spring programs every year.
This Friday Senior Day festivities will start at 1 p.m. and include line dancing instruction and fun for those participating or watching. Bingo and pizza are also on the agenda. We hope to have a big crowd again.
In addition to our twice yearly Senior Day, WPL also provides a monthly program of music and lunch at noon on the second Tuesday of each month. Everyone has enjoyed pizza, sodas, and a variety of live music since the program began in 2001. “Music at the Library” presents all kinds of music, everything from classical guitar to opera to country music.
Another monthly adult program is Friday Night at the Movies on the last Friday of each month. New feature films are shown along with free popcorn and drinks. Friends of the Library provided the projector and WPL becomes a theater! When appropriate, everyone is encouraged to read the book after watching the movie. Two book clubs are sponsored by the library and meet each third Wednesday to discuss their selected books.
The Brown Bag Book Club meets at noon and for the convenience of our patrons, there is an evening book club meeting at 7 p.m.
Expanded programs and services, increased usage, collection growth, and technological needs require an addition to the building so that library services can continue to be delivered efficiently. Currently, Waynesboro Public Library provides almost 500 programs per year for children and adults in the community. — Adult Services Librarian Diane Devoy
