If you have attended monthly free noon-time music programs complete with pizza at the library, then you have encountered the Friends of the Waynesboro Public Library. Through contributions to the library’s adult programs, the Friends provide money to support music programs and other adult events such as the special-interest speakers and movie night held in the basement’s multi-purpose rooms. They also furnished chairs, tables, a lectern and a new piano for the room.
These are just a few examples of the ways in which the Friends help to make the library one of Waynesboro’s finest attractions and resources.
Volunteers help the library staff process new acquisitions, organize and maintain genealogical materials and with many other tasks such as shelf reading. Friends also support the many children’s programs that are very important to the community. Introducing your child to books early in life is one of the most important things you can do as a parent.
One of the most visible things you see the Friends doing is the annual book sale. The community donates their used books to the library throughout the year. The Friends work pricing them and getting them ready for the sale in September. The sale has grown over the years to include book dealers from throughout the state because of the variety and quality of the used books. The thousands of dollars raised provide most of the money for the equipment and programs the Friends support.
The Friends are a wide-ranging group of interested, public-spirited individuals who support the library with their dues, contributions and volunteer activities throughout the year.
The Waynesboro Friends organization was founded in the 1960s when the present library was built. Many public libraries in the United States have Friends organizations similar to what WPL has in Waynesboro.
You can join the Friends for a $10 annual initiation fee, $15 for families or $100 for an individual lifetime membership.
Are you a friend? Wouldn’t you like to be one?
