Twin stone lions guard the doors to Waynesboro’s latest dining option – the recently expanded Ming Garden on the corner of Federal Street and Arch Avenue.
Once inside, a life-sized Buddha greets visitors with a hearty laugh – and a healthy list of menu choices.
“We have more items,” said Michelle Lui, co-owner. “Including the sushi bar, we have six buffet bars.”
The eatery’s enlarged kitchen offers more than 100 Japanese, Chinese and American items and a larger wait staff.
At 12,000 square feet, the location dwarfs the outgrown building. Ming Garden now boasts two party rooms, which seat 50 and 35 people, respectively.
“Before, if there was more than 80 people coming, they would have to wait in line to sit at a table,” Lui said. “Now we have almost 300 seats, so there is less waiting time. And it’s more comfortable, because now we have booths.”
Operated by the Ni family, Ming Garden invites patrons to a true dining experience. Added touches feature an expansive back-lit fish tank, opulent indoor fountain and lowered marble table for those who desire added authenticity.
Chuck Heirs, 55, paused during lunch with friends to comment on the location’s fresh look.
“It’s very nice, very upscale,” the Harrisonburg resident said. “We need something like this in this city.”
The crowd on July 13 – opening night – greatly exceeded expectations, according to Lui.
“It was really busy,” Lui said. “I didn’t think it was going to be that busy because we didn’t do any advertising.
Regulars at Ming Garden had no trouble finding their way to the new address.
“I had to go hunt it [down],” said Edith Mizer, 87, of Fishersville. “I heard they were moving – I thought they were joshin’ me. I just really like to come here; I’ve been eating here for years.”
Lui says the staff has been on its toes all week as word of the upgrade spread through the city.
“We’ll be back,” declared Randy Benson, 64. The Waynesboro resident added, “It’s a pretty place, that’s for sure.”
Future upgrades include the installation of televisions, as well as a beer permit.
For those who wish to enjoy the Asian and American cuisine from home, Ming Garden also offers delivery to a limited area — for a minimum purchase of $10.
The all-you-can-eat buffet is open seven days a week.
