In the studio
Fine crafts from creators around the Commonwealth fill the shelves and walls year-round at the Artisans Center of Virginia, 801 West Broad St. in Willow Oak Plaza. But for one weekend, fine crafts enthusiasts will get the opportunity to get a peek at the some of the artisans who created those crafts - and their studios.
A castle and a &mystery cottage& on Afton
The house at the curve on Route 250 ascending the mountain a mile east of the Woodworth Animal Hospital was painted black with orange trim in the 1940s. Locals called it "The Halloween Cottage," and said it was part of a mountain estate with a "Mystery Castle." Small children imagined a witch occupying "The Halloween Cottage" and Dracula occupying the "Mystery Castle" on the mountain above Waynesboro.

Swannanoa: A history
Two castles were constructed on the Blue Ridge above Waynesboro between 1908 and 1913 by Richmond tycoons. One was Swannanoa (c. 1908-12), a 52-room marble palace replicating the Villa Medici in Rome, built by Major James Henry Dooley, a Confederate veteran and executive with the C&O Railroad.

Thinking with numbers
People with dyslexia are born with brains that think with images and ideas instead of words and phrases. They are born with a natural aptitude for three dimensional thought, but not a natural tendency toward recognizing letters and words. This makes learning to read and spell especially difficult - but not impossible.

Baggage and luggage on your spiritual journey
Professional counselors have taught us that everyone carries emotional baggage from the past and that too much of it can spoil our happiness in the present. From the pulpit
Jesus' last prayer before his arrest was filled with joy. How could that be- He has been describing to his disciples an apparently joyless event - their upcoming betrayal and abandonment of him, to be followed by his arrest, conviction and public execution by crucifixion. What is so joyful about that-

Playing dead
A handful of strangers, trapped in a farmhouse. Outside, the world as they know it is ending. Hundreds of deathly figures shuffle through the darkness, ghoulish hands grasping through boarded-up windows for their next victim.

Sweet season
In the parking lot on the corner of Main Street and Arch Avenue, 13 varieties of apples - all grown in Virginia - tantalize passers-by as they drift through the Fall Foliage Art Festival. The smell of apples becomes apparent in the air as you step close to the produce. Behind the rows of fruit, William Turner smiles cheerfully.

It’s all about concentration
Watching Tiger Woods play golf is like watching a hawk stalk his prey. It is obvious that Tiger's mind is totally on his game. Nothing and no one distracts him and he never distracts himself.

Modern-day treasure hunt
It's just a whittled down pencil and a log of names tucked away inside a plain brown M&M's candy dispenser. Not much to most people.
The late summer of our discontent
It began last week on my living-room couch. Lying with my feet propped up on some old newspapers, I turned away from the magazine I was reading and suddenly noticed a raised black dot on the coffee table.

The Lord’s Prayer and the Disciple’s Prayer
These two prayers have been confused. While there are similarities, like "apples and oranges" they are separate and distinct prayers, so much so that we can safely say that Jesus could not pray what has come to be known as the "Lord's Prayer" (at least not all of it) and no one else can pray the one prayer that is truly his (and his alone).
