The 41st Annual Art in the Park will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton. The show is free, and according to Beth Hodge, executive director of the Staunton Augusta Art Center, there will be something for everyone.

"We try to make it bigger and better every year," Hodge said.

The event, featuring local art, music and food, is being primarily sponsored by the Green Valley Book Fair, Donald V. Steger, Jr. CPA PC and Betty Owen, in memory of her mother, Staunton Augusta Art Center founder Ruth Owen.

"[Betty] Owen lives too far away to attend this event, but she feels it is significant to keep supporting it in honor of her mother, who put so much of her time into founding the art center," Hodge said. "Her sponsorship provides the monies for the prizes that will be awarded in the art show."

Hodge added that she is amazed by the generosity of the people who participate in the show.

"Those who are providing music for the show don't charge us anything," she said "And their music is very well received. We will have local musicians with music ranging from Irish pub music to selections by the Shelburne Middle School."

There will be over 60 artists represented in this show, about the same number represented in years past.

"This is known as a quality art show," Hodge said. "Some of the changes we've made recently include adding the second day to the show, as of last year. This year we saw no resistance to having it on a holiday or Memorial Day weekend. I really feel this show is better than last year's. We have some artists returning but we are also showing a lot of new artists coming."

Parking this year will be designated for the handicapped.

"We are going to reserve parking only for those who are handicapped or who have difficulty getting around to the Thornrose entrance," said Hodge. "Everyone else can park wherever parking is available in the park."

The show itself includes an adult art competition with cash prizes. There is also a youth art competition.

"We want to keep the focus on visual art in the community," Hodge said. "We are non-profit and we function primarily due to our volunteers."

The artists represented at this year's show feature locals and a number of artists traveling from quite a distance, said Hodge.

"We have a great variety of work that will be exhibited and available for purchase," she added.
