It's a tradition many generations old, but even in today's fast-paced world, nothing says "summer" like a trip to the county fair.

The sights - the beauty pageant, a motocross event, the fireworks. The sounds - laughing children, the mooing of cows at the livestock barn, music tinkling from carnival rides. The tastes - sweet and savory treats of every description from food vendors at the midway.

It'll all be there at Augusta County Fair, starting Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Augusta Expoland in Fishersville.

Old favorites will return. New delights will debut. It's five days full of excitement and takes a whole year to plan, said Susie Shiflett, one of the fair's organizers.

"I feel excited," Shiflett said. "We have a lot of good stuff and a lot returning that everybody like last year."

New attractions include a fireworks show Tuesday night, a educational science show - "Flumpa and Friends" - for kids on Wednesday night, lawnmower racing on Thursday night and a "funny and entertaining" demonstration by professional lumberjacks from Fred Scheer's Lumberjack Shows.

"We live in an area where lumberjacking has been [a profession]," Shiflett said. "We thought it would be a neat thing to do this show where we're located. We're close to West Virginia and Highland County; those are big lumber areas."

Returning attractions include all of the favorites -animal shows, the petting zoo, a "miniature NASCAR" event by Fast-Action Motorsports, high school rodeo, the craft fair and of course the carnival, again this year by Rosedale Attractions.

"It's a good carnival," Shiflett said. "And we have one of the best petting zoos that any fair has got. Kids can get right in there with the animals and pet them."

Also returning are motocross on Tuesday night (sponsored by The News Virginian), the demolition derby on Wednesday and Gospel Night on Thursday.
