The pool will open again for the weekend of June 2-3 before opening full time for the season beginning Saturday, June 9.
On Memorial Day weekend, the pool will be open for general admission from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 26; from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 27; and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, May 28.
Free swim will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. for Waynesboro and Augusta County residents only on Memorial weekend each day. All others will pay general admission to swim from 6 to 7:30 p.m. General Admission is $3 for adults ages 16 and over and $1 for children ages 15 and under. Season passes are also available
"I have a guy in maintenance that has been working on pool preparation for three to four weeks now," said Bruce Payne, assistant director of Waynesboro Parks and Recreation.
"It's not just a matter of taking the cover off," he added. "We've ordered chemicals and we've been using them and we'll continue to order liquid chlorine every several weeks. We order it from a supplier in Newport News. It's a little cheaper than gas and a lot less hazardous if there is a spill. There is no hands-on with the liquid chlorine. They just hose it into our storage tank.
"Before we take the winter cover off, the pumps go up and we keep them going. Then we put chlorine and necessary chemicals in and that runs for a while, until the water temperature is at 55 degrees. Then we take the cover off the pool and treat it with calcium, chlorine and for the right PH balance. Then a whole lot of vacuuming takes place for cleaning the pool. It takes well over a month to prepare the pool."
The Waynesboro Department of Park and Recreation, 413 Port Republic Rd., Waynesboro, is also currently registering for swim lessons at Ridgeview Park and forming their swim team. Anyone interested in the swim team or wishing to register should call the recreation department at 942-6735.
Staunton City Recreation and Parks Department is also in the process of preparing to open the pool at Gypsy Hill Park and is aiming for Memorial Day weekend, weather pending. At this time, park officials are thinking that Montgomery Hall Park may be opening a little later.
Hours for the Gypsy Hill pool will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays; from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday thorough Saturday; and 1-6 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $1 for children ages 1 to 5; $1.50 for children ages 6 to 12; and $2.50 for ages 13 and up.
Montgomery Hall Park pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
