Yes, it's another year of lamenting the absence of superstars who aren't interested in trekking around in the summer heat. As Gary Bongiovanni, editor of concert industry trade magazine Pollstar, points out, "there really isn't any mega tour that brings the fan and media focus like U2 or McCartney or Madonna."
But, he adds, The Police and Genesis reunions provide a smidgen of excitement to an otherwise rote list of names. The closest that Police tour -- which is hitting a combination of stadiums and arenas -- comes to Richmond is Aug. 4 at the Virgin Music Festival at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore. And area Genesis fans have the whole summer to stew through before Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks arrive at the Verizon Center in D.C. on Sept. 23.
What you will see plenty of this summer are multibill tours from both veterans and new kids. Def Leppard and Poison have succeeded more than their hair band roots might suggest. While hooked up with similar artists the past couple of summers, they have grossed a per-show average of $389,000 and $146,000, respectively. This year, Def Leppard is teaming with Styx and Foreigner, and Poison dug through the metal bin to resurrect Ratt and White Lion. Both shows will stop at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater and Nissan Pavilion in Manassas.
Younger acts have taken a cue from their elders, as Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and a slew of others have latched onto established all-day concerts such as the Vans Warped Tour and the Linkin Park-fronted Projekt Revolution tour.
One appeal of those types of shows is their reasonable-by-comparison ticket prices.
"It's just smart business," Bongiovanni says. "In the summer, fans have a lot of choices and you want to be the act to stand out as a good value and give fans what they perceive as a real value . . . The Warped Tour is the best value in the business, and a lot of kids go just for the social scene."
The Vans Warped Tour will play Virginia Beach Amphitheater on July 24 and carries a $25 ticket price for its roster of about 40 bands.
For those looking for more soothing tunes, classical music festival mainstays from Fredericksburg to Staunton are back for another season as well.
