There is no reason for seniors living in Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County to not be cool this summer.

The Valley Program for Aging Services offers both box and oscillating fans to any senior age 60 and over who meets certain income guidelines though the agency's Fan Care program.

A single senior with an adjusted income not greater than $1,225 per month, and a couple with an income not greater than $1,650 per month are eligible, said Jennifer Chestnut, the VPAS senior services director for Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County.

All else that is necessary is to come to the agency's offices or senior center at 325 Pine Avenue and fill out an application.

"A lot of folks completely lack a cooling device,'' said Chestnut.

She said that by having a fan or air conditioner, "there are a lot of stories from clients who have improved their quality of life and improved their medical conditions."

Funding for the project comes from Dominion Virginia Power, and goes to the Virginia Department of Aging before coming to regional program such as the Valley Program for Aging Services.

Chestnut said that as of late June, between 40 and 45 fans were still available.

Meanwhile, seniors living in Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County can also qualify for coupons to purchase fruits, vegetables or herbs at either the Verona or Staunton Farmer's Market.

Again, income is a key. Seniors 60 or older in a one-person household should not make more than $1,574 per month, while a two-person household should not have an income of more than $2,111 per month.

Chestnut said the single seniors can get one $40 coupon per season, while a couple is eligible for an $80 coupon. The program is funded through the Virginia Department of Agriculture.

Questions about either program can be answered by calling the Valley Program for Aging Services in Waynesboro at 949-7141.
