A fiery crash involving a single tractor-trailer shut down southbound Interstate 81 this morning.
Sgt. David Cooper of the Virginia State Police said William Andrews of Roanoke, the driver of the truck, was airlifted to U.Va. Medical Center with unknown injuries after his vehicle veered to the left, went though the guardrail and took to the air, striking a bridge on the northbound side of the highway near mile marker 234 in Weyers Cave. Police said Andrews was awake during the airlift.
Cooper said I-81 southbound was completely shut down for 30 minutes after the 9:10 a.m. accident, but now has one lane open.
