Residents of Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro who lack prescription drug coverage can now get some assistance through the Augusta County Prescription Discount Card program.
The card is offered in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties and can provide assistance to those who lack prescription coverage or whose drug plan does not cover a specific medication.
Anita Harris, assistant director of Shenandoah Valley Social Services, said those using the card can save 20 percent off a regular pharmacy price and an average of 50 percent on 90-day supplies of select generics through mail service.
Harris said there are no income or age requirements.
“We hope people will take advantage,” she said. “One card can serve a whole family.” Harris said drugstore chains such as CVS and Rite Aid are participating, as are Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart and many others.
Cards can be picked up at two Verona locations — the Augusta County Government Center or Shenandoah Valley Social Services office for Staunton/Augusta County.
The cards can also be picked up at the Waynesboro Shenandoah Valley Social Services office on Shenandoah Avenue.
For further information, call DSS at 245-5800 or 942-6646 or the Augusta County Government Center at 245-5600.

Why would I want to save so little on my drugs when I already save 50 to 70 percent at my licensed foreign pharmacy? I have been buying my meds there for years, and the drugs are just as high quality as US pharmacies, but at fraction of the US price. My foreign pharmacy, International Drug Mart, is a godsend, because for once in my life I can manage both my medication costs and other day-to-day living costs—without giving up on any necessities. And, my doctor even agrees with my pharmacy choice.
