One critically hurt in Purple Cow-Eastside accident

DOOMS - A 19-year-old Stuarts Draft woman was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in critical condition Tuesday after police said she ran a stop sign and was T-boned by another vehicle at the interesection of Purple Cow Road and Eastside Highway.

The Virginia State Police said Kristen Benavitch, 19, of Stuarts Draft, pulled out of Purple Cow Road at Eastside Highway without stopping for the stop sign.

Her 1998 Honda Accord was T-boned after it pulled into the path of a northbound 2007 Dodge truck driven by Gary Shifflett, Jr., 38, of Grottoes, said Trooper Doug Brydge of the state police.

Benavitch was airlifted to the Univesity of Virginia Medical Center where she was in critical condition, according to a UVa spokeswoman.

The accident happened about 11 a.m., and traffic was delayed along Eastside Highway. Brydge said the accident was cleared about 12:30 p.m.

Charges have not been brought, but Brydge said they are pending.
