An elderly Staunton woman died Friday following a two-car accident on Route 262, according to Officer Wyatt Brown of the Staunton Police Department.
Nancy Lethrop, 84, driving a gold Toyota Avalon, was coming off of Country Club Road about a quarter-mile from the Interstate 81 exit ramp when a white GMC truck heading west struck the driver’s side door, Brown said. Police received the call at 4:22 p.m., Brown said. Lethrop died at the scene.
Brown said he believes Lethrop was trying to cross all four lanes of the highway and turn east. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined, but Brown said it “looks as though she failed to yield at the stop sign” before entering into oncoming traffic.
The speed limit on that stretch of road is 55 mph, Brown said. Neither the driver nor the passenger of the GMC was seriously injured.
Brown said he could recall no recent accidents along that stretch of road.
