Two Waynesboro men have been charged with breaking into a home at the Brandon Ladd Apartments and taking more than 100 DVDs, two 12-packs of beer, a 380 semi-automatic handgun and a PlayStation 2, according to the Waynesboro Police Department.
Steven D Shiflett, 21, of Waynesboro, and Justin T. Cash, 19, of Waynesboro, were both charged with felony counts of grand larceny and breaking and entering in the nighttime of a dwelling with intent to commit larceny. Cash is also charged with the felony theft of a firearm.
Additional charges are pending in an earlier break-in in the 1700 block of Talbot Place. That incident involved the theft of two World War II-era handguns.
At the time of the original report, according to a Waynesboro Police Department news release, the victim was unsure who might have taken his belongings in the Tuesday thefts.
On a hunch, however, the victim later went to a home in the 100 block of James Avenue, where he confronted a man outside the home. When asked about the items, the man ran inside before leaving on foot.
Police again were notified and obtained a search warrant for the James Avenue home.
At about the same time, police say they arrested one of the suspects.
Officers later recovered two firearms — including the pistol stolen from the Brandon Ladd Apartments — hidden by one of the suspects near some railroad tracks, according to the release.
Police executed an additional search warrant in the 1700 block of Talbot Place.
