A confidential informant “fell apart” when questioned last week, undermining cases against 15 of 28 suspected drug dealers arrested in October after “Operation Crackdown,” a year-long investigation by Waynesboro police and the WASSP Task Force.
Unwilling to prosecute with the unreliable informant, Waynesboro prosecutor Charles Ajemian nolle prossed 43 charges Friday, a move that allows — while unlikely — for charges to be prosecuted later.
“Law enforcement officers contacted me … with respect to the facts and circumstances that raise serious question as to the credibility and reliability of a confidential informant,” said a motion by Ajemian.
Waynesboro police said Wednesday they support Ajemian’s decision not to prosecute and promised to continue working similar cases. Those freed from charges said they were wrongfully targeted in a mishandled and reputation-smearing drug bust that cost them thousands of dollars in bond money and attorney fees.
