CHARLOTTESVILLE — A Fluvanna man accused of attacking a witness in a courtroom has pleaded guilty to assault and battery and threatening a witness.

Mark Wayne Shifflett was sentenced Tuesday to 12 months on each charge after entering his plea. Albermarle County General District Court Judge Downer then suspended all but 15 months of the terms.

Albemarle police Sgt. Tim Aylor testified Tuesday that the 46-year-old Shifflett hit and threatened his accuser while awaiting a preliminary hearing on a credit card fraud charge.

After the Aug. 21 incident, Sheriff J.E. “Chip” Harding said he planned to revise courtroom security.
