The bipartisan polling watchdog group Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law reported a number of signs to state election officials today in Staunton.

The “ID Required” signs are incorrect, attorney Terry Burt said at Christ United Methodist Church, the polling place for Staunton’s Ward 2.

A member of Virginia Protect the Vote spotted the signs at 6:30 a.m., and some polling places yanked them in the afternoon after discussion with members of the lawyers group and state election officials. Chief election officials at Bessie Weller Elementary School and Gypsy Hill park pulled the signs at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

“It makes sense,“ Burt said of alerting voters to having identification read. “But you know, it’s not the law.“

The Lexington attorney also said some first-time voters may have been improperly given provisional ballots, but reported few other legal issues at Staunton polls, calling officials “very professional.“

Aye.  Precincts are supposed to have a back-up plan in terms of verifying a voter’s identity without the actual ID.  But, c’mon laddies!  Didje expect to be able to have a seamless voting experience without presentin’ an ID?  Be prepared and take ye voting right seriously.
