An Alabama man staying in a Waynesboro hotel was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly stabbing another guest with a box cutter, police said.
Andrew Lee Mitchell, 55, of Mobile, Al., has been charged with one felony count of malicious wounding and is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Waynesboro police responded to the Quality Inn on Broad Street, where both subjects were staying, shortly after the 12:30 a.m. incident, said Sgt. Brian Edwards of the Waynesboro Police Department. The victim - a 31-year-old resident of Theodore, Al. - was in the parking lot when authorities arrived and directed police to Mitchell’s room.
The victim, who had been stabbed in the chest, was transported to Augusta Medical Center where he was treated and released, Edwards said. Mitchell made no attempt to escape and was arrested without incident, Edwards said.
The two men are construction workers, housed temporarily at the hotel by their employer, Edwards said. The stabbing occurred after an argument over the best way to purchase illegal drugs, Edwards said. Both men were intoxicated at the time, he said.
