A Charlottesville man has been arrested and charged with the Sunday night shooting of his girlfriend at a Waynesboro apartment complex.
James Carson Johnson, 34, was being held in the Middle River Regional Jail Monday on charges of aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.
Waynesboro police said they were called to the Winchester Garden Apartments in the 1000 block of 10th Steet around 11 Sunday night.
When they arrived, they found a 42-year-old woman outside the complex with a gunshot wound to her heard. Johnson was identified as the shooter and his car was spotted just east of Waynesboro on U.S. 250.
He was stopped on near Interstate 64 at the top of Afton Mountain and arrested. A semi-automatic handgun was found along the shoulder of 250 about a half-mile from where Johnson was arrested.
The victim, who was Johnson’s girlfriend, was taken first to Augusta Medical Center then airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center. The bullet entered her head and traveled down to her chest. She was in serious but stable condition this morning.
Johnson is being held without bond.
