A Fishersville resident was arrested Sunday after allegedly attempting to rob a small Crimora grocery store, police said.
A man entered East Side Grocery on Route 340 at around 1:30 p.m. and told the store’s middle-aged, female clerk, “I’m going to need a shield, because I want all the money in the register,” said Investigator Paul McCormick of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect then reached inside his shirt, implying that he was armed, McCormick said. It is unclear whether a weapon was actually involved.
When a customer entered the store a few moments later, the would-be robber fled the scene. Nothing was taken from the store and no one was injured, McCormick said.
Based on witness descriptions, Jeremy Hamilton, 27, was identified as a suspect and arrested in the area about an hour after the incident, McCormick said.
Hamilton is currently being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
Police have ruled out a link between the Sunday attempted robbery and a similar incident Friday at Ladd Convenience Store, also on Route 340, McCormick said.
