A man was in custody Thursday night after he fled on foot from police on Broad Street following a stop for speeding.

Waynesboro police said the man was stopped just before 9 p.m. after his blue Pontiac Sunfire was seen speeding down Port Republic Road.

The car stopped in a parking lot on Broad Street.

A city K-9 dog was used, and the dog indicated there might be drugs in the Sunfire. Police searched the car and found a weapon, and then the man took off on foot from the parking lot.

He ran several blocks. A man fitting the description of the suspect dressed in a red shirt and white shorts was seen on a parking lot surveillance video for the Ming Garden Restaurant on Federal Street just after 9 p.m.

Police arrested the man around the corner from the restaurant.

Waynesboro police said charges were pending Thursday night.
