Flashing blue lights were a frequent sight on Waynesboro streets over the Memorial Day weekend, as police stepped up patrols and cracked down on violations with a zero tolerance traffic enforcement policy.
As many as three extra officers were deployed at a time between Friday evening and Monday night, keeping a sharp eye out for speeding, unsafe driving, unfastened seatbelts and other violations, said Sgt. Kelly Walker of the Waynesboro Police Department. The heightened enforcement, part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign, may have helped prevent any serious accidents in the city during the holiday, he said.
“The campaign not only affected drivers who were pulled over and warned or cited for any number of violations, but it also affected other drivers who pass by and see that police activity,” Walker said. “That visibility is enforcement in itself.”
Over the weekend, Waynesboro police issued 30 speeding tickets, 52 tickets for motorists not wearing seatbelts, three child restraint violations, five tickets for motorists driving with suspended licenses, four DUI citations and 47 tickets for other various violations, Walker said.
The Click It or Ticket campaign continues until June 1, and extra officers will be deployed on the city’s streets throughout that period, Walker said.
