Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte will spend a good portion of Saturday making campaign stops in the area.
In addition to an 8 a.m. visit to Mrs. Rowe’s Restaurant in Staunton for a breakfast speech to area Republicans, the congressman also plans to do some door-to-door campaigning in either Augusta County or Waynesboro and will go to a 5 p.m. parade in Deerfield.
Campaign Manager Dave Rexrode said Goodlatte will finish his day at the Augusta County Fair Saturday night.
Rexrode said Goodlatte wants to squeeze in campaigning before Congress ends its recess next month. He said it is not clear how much time there will be in the fall for campaigning.
“They will go back in session after Labor Day. Two years ago, they didn’t adjourn until three weeks before the election,’’ Rexrode said.
Rexrode said unlike a new candidate, the eight-term congressman focuses on what issues voters find important.
“He’s not leaving literature. He’s talking to voters about what’s on their minds,’’ Rexrode said.
Goodlatte is opposed in November by Democrat Sam Rasoul and Independent candidate Janice Lee Allen.
Rasoul said he also plans a stop at the Augusta County Fair on Saturday evening. His visit there will follow a day of campaigning in Shenandoah County.
