After the thousands of dollars spent on mailings; signs; ads in print, online and on-air; multiple forums; and door-to-door campaigning filled with promises, the hard part – doing the work entrusted upon them by the city’s voters – begins.
Downtown still has empty storefronts. There continues to be a flood of stormwater projects – still without a funding mechanism in place for managing them. And Waynesboro’s debt load is more than $60 million.
Yet, with the trifecta of Bruce Allen, Frank Lucente and Tim Williams winning in a landslide Tuesday, they’ll form a new, conservative majority come July 1. It’ll be a new day in Waynesboro, and with it, new hopes and fears.
Those hopes, Allen said, include a more fiscally conservative council that will hold the line on taxes. Voters told Allen they want a council that will be good stewards of their money.
“They realize that we have to live within our means and be conservative with our dollars,” Allen said.
However, with the dynamic of the council changing – putting Vice Mayor Nancy Dowdy and Councilwoman Lorie Smith in the minority – several losing council candidates fear the city could regress.
Jeremy Taylor, who along with DuBose Egleston, Jr. lost overwhelmingly to Lucente, said he would work to implement the November referendum projects voters supported – a west-end fire station, a library expansion and stormwater improvements – along with downtown revitalization. He said he misread the attitudes of voters.
“I think what they’ve said loud and clear is that they would rather have low taxes than improvements that our city needs,” Taylor said.
Graham, who along with Taylor received backing from Wayne Theatre Alliance chairman Bill Hausrath, said that the Wayne Theatre project “is very much in question.”
“I really fear for Waynesboro’s future,” Graham said.
Egleston also echoed Graham’s sentiments, saying the recent progress the city has made will be undone.
“I think the progress we’ve made the last six years will be undone, and I think we’ve got to have services provided,” Egleston said. “And I think this [result] will be a step back.”
Graham and Bruno both said the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of DuPont Workers Local 381 was key to the election results. The union represents employees at Invista, the city’s largest employer with more than 1,000 workers.
The union, along with company officials, said a stormwater fee could cost the company up to $240,000 yearly. Both have expressed fears that a fee could force job cuts or a company move.
“People saw that electing others would have caused them to lose jobs,” Bruno said.

i stand corrected.
1) Reo is forgettable. well, i try to forget him anyway.
2) Right after Lucente was appointed, an all consuming event occurred in my life and city council activity became a non-event in my world.
3) I’m getting old and I’m tired.
Alex, I apologize. Valleygal, get over it.

Mejenks clearly is either out of the loop or a new resident of the area. Of course Hatfield and Lucente were on council at the same time - in fact, in 2005 the pair formed 2/3rds of what local media called the “The Amigos” because they almost always voted together as a block. I suggest you check out the city of Waynesboro’s website for minutes of city council from 2005 and thereabouts if you doubt that. - Donna

mejenks -
They in fact were on the Council together.
Frank was appointed in April 2005 to fill Chuck Ricketts’ seat after he retired. So they served together for over a year before the 2006 election that Reo lost to Lorie Smith.

Not sure why DuBose feels that the progress of the last six years will be undone.
He should remember that a good portion of that six years was spent with a Hatfield/Lucente/Williams majority on the council who presumably were at least partially responsible for that progress.

Hear, Hear mejenks
If the Wayne Theater Alliance wants that project to come to fruition, than let them raise the money through donations, grants, etc NOT by asking the city to pay for it. The same goes for lighted ballfeilds and sidewalks where no on has asked for them.
I want a west-side fire station, the extension to the library and the Stormwater issues fixed. These issues have been desired by the people of Waynesboro for longer than I have been living in Waynesboro, and these people who want to turn Waynesboro into a copy of Charlottesville should get this through their heads and move some closer to Charlottesville like Crozet or Ivy.
What I want is a city council that will make headway on fixing these problems not hold the projects we want hostage for the Wayne Theatre.

Jeremy, you have no clue. That is why you didn’t get elected.
People do want the referendum completed as they voted in November. Frank is on board with getting the referendum issues accomplished. The fact that you SAY it’s different doesn’t make it so. This isn’t Jeremy’s world, this is reality. I encourage you to discover the world that the rest of us live in.
I also find it interesting that the one Chris Graham quote that the newspaper uses is in regard to the Wayne Theater project being very much in question. THAT is why you lost, Chris. We, the voters, believe that the Wayne Theater project absolutely SHOULD be in question!! No matter how hard you tried to throw other matters in front of our faces, we knew where your heart was and where your money came from.
I am anxiously waiting to see what the three amigos will do with their newly found power. I hope they cut their puppet strings and stand on their own feet as individual council members. I want to see them disagree about something right out of the gate. We did NOT vote in a threesome. We voted in three individuals who (hopefully) have common sense and who have integrity to do what’s best for the citizens (and not Reo Hatfield). No scratching of backs, please, just do what’s right for the city for Waynesboro.
