Obits evolve in changing times
When change comes to the Shenandoah Valley, you can be pretty sure there has been a sea change in American culture. People here thrive on tradition. They have a deep and abiding suspicion that the past holds more promise than the future. So I sat up and took notice when obituaries changed the way they listed survivors of the deceased.September 01, 2007

A nation of immigrants immigrants
While on the phone with an old friend who happens to be married to a man from the Middle East, she slid two sentences into our conversation about health and family: "The immigrant community is devastated by what is going on in Washington. You have to understand that they believed in this country more than anyone else."A nation of immigrants

More than any other one thing, the car signifies full membership in American society. Forget registering to vote; register to drive! Getting your first driver's license is the coming-of-age ritual for teens.May 19, 2007
To be or not to be: The Wayne Theatre question
To be or not to be. That line, written by William Shakespeare several centuries ago, speaks directly to the choice the Waynesboro City Council faces today. If the Council decides to appropriate $300,000 of taxpayer money to renovate the Wayne Theatre, those memorable words might be repeated on its stage someday, or more likely, some evening, soon.Falwell offended some, empowered others
Jerry Falwell made a big splash with his life. He made life happier, better, more meaningful for many, many people. And he made life much more difficult and unhappy for many other people. My life will leave few ripples in its wake. His life will leave big ocean waves.May 17, 2007
