Hokie fans take things to a whole new level

Last Saturday, I was able to get football tickets to the annual Commonwealth Bowl held in Blacksburg. Thinking the Interstate 81 traffic would be heavy because of the rivalry between the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech football teams, my son-in-law and I decided to leave home early. We had figured right but a bigger or more important decision to be made was whether I should wear my U.Va. Cavalier sweatshirt. I decided that since I’m a true Cavalier fan, I’d wear the sweatshirt but be respectful.
A U.Va. season ticketholder, on many occasions I’ve witnessed what happens when fans of opponents occupy seats within the midst of U.Va. fans. As long as the visiting fans aren’t obnoxious or belligerent, people enjoy themselves.
Walking through Tech’s parking lot — filled with its fans — was interesting. While I didn’t draw verbal responses, the stares of Tech followers said it all. But it really got interesting when we took our seats among the Tech faithful.
After finding our seats and again absorbing stares, conversations between them and us began. A strong Tech female supporter seated behind me let me know immediately that she was a ‘beater.’ ” She even demonstrated by beating me on my shoulders.
As it turned out, Virginia scored first so it was a while before she pounded my shoulders. True to her word, the pounding began as Tech played catch-up gaining first downs, and eventually scored. I noticed though that when the Cavaliers were successful, in any way, she didn’t touch me.
About midway through the second quarter, the Wahoos scored again. I started to turn around to ask why she stopped beating but thought better of it. It was a good decision.
At halftime with Virginia leading 14-7, after the Hokies threw an interception, the real Tech loyalty showed itself. In fact Hokie fans take loyalty to another level.
During halftimes of ACC football games, the home team’s scoreboard shows a public service announcement film depicting youth league football players wearing jerseys from Atlantic Coast Conference schools. The announcement is a spliced and diced statement converted into a continuous sportsmanship piece.
When the little boy in the Cavalier jersey appeared, many Tech fans booed him. To be honest, I’ve heard booing at Virginia games but their booing was directed at Florida State and Clemson reps, not Tech.
Another time, Hokie fans and western Virginians made a political statement.
It’s traditional during halftime of the Commonwealth Bowl for Virginia and Tech’s presidents and the Virginia governor to be introduced. When John T. Casteen, of U.Va., and Charles W. Steger, of Tech, were acknowledged, each was applauded. Steger as expected, received the louder applause. However when Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was introduced, he was loudly booed, even more than the kid wearing the Virginia jersey had been.
My son-in-law wondered why. I told him it was because Kaine supported President-elect Barack Obama and in this very conservative part of Virginia, the residents and voters aren’t forgiving.
Hopefully by the time 2012 arrives, the Democratic governor along with Obama, should he be successful and able to attend, will receive warm applause.

Let’s see, no vulgar or trash talk, just some stares. Apparently the VT fans weren’t happy with an INT going into the half (the horror) and the crowd booed the UVA rep instead of booing the FSU and Clemson kids like they do at Scott.
This is ‘taking it to a whole new level’ and worthy of an opinion piece?
I’m sorry if the lady behind Mr. Graves offended or hurt him, although odd he never indicated he asked her to stop. So it is not quite clear if he was upset at her actions, or only that VT provided more times for her to cheer than not.

I ahve attended many games at Lane where I can not say that I have not seen a few (usually drunk looking for trouble) visiting fans not treated with respect(WVU fans come to mind), visiting fans are treated with respect. On Saturday,a UVA fan (who I did not know) and myself bantered back and forth during the game. I Grave’s eyes that probably would have been considered mistreatment. I do not think Graves was mistreated at all just playing to his audience.
Some did boo Kaine, no question. Booing Kaine for supporting Obama is just well rediculous and I believe shows a certain amount of bigotry on Graves part. Kaine has not been even an average Gov. Why he has taken a budget that according to Warner was in good shape and for the last years had to make major cuts (a very sizable amount in the college funding) to make ends meet because we are so destitute. Now my question is it Kaine or Warner that is not on target? Doesn’t matter since I do not believe that Graves was treated badly at VT nor does he have a sense of why Kaine was booed but to say what he said helps support his little blindered world.

I am sorry that you as a visitor had an over zealous fan behind you. That was unfortunate, but in any stadium in any venue where 70,000 people that happens. Beyond that, I find your remarks really questionable. While you have your reality, you have severe paranoia over wearing your UVA jersey. You, and any school are welcome at Tech, and I hope treated with respect. We don’t condone harassing visitors. Of course people will stare, no different from when I attend UVA, GT or any other venue. For your comments on booing the commercial. Get a life. That has been running all year and its a fan favorite to boo the jersey. Yes, VA and Miami, not the kids. For your comments on Gov. Kaine, I believe are totally inappropriate. No one knows why (and it wasn’t very much)booing. But to imply it was due to voting for President elect Obama and the people of SW Va are bigoted, racist or overly conservative is wrong. The fans that fill that stadium come from many states and have mixtures of values. I think that you, as a person, are a bit to sensative, and you should reserve yourself to watching on TV.

It sounds like Mr. Graves is having problems with paranoia. They have medication for that by the way. He could feel the stares because of his UVA jersey. Give me a brake. I am sorry he had a nut job behind him that put her hands on him. I would not have put up with that. Other than that I hope he had a good time, I did! As far as the little kid in the UVA jersey it was not the kid that gets boo’s it is the jersey. As far as Tim Kaine is concerned, outside of Richmond, Charlottesville and NOVA I am sure he is use to the boo’s. That is what happens when you are a misrable failure as a govenor. I am sure the next conserative govenor that is more in step with most of Virginia will be more warmly recieved. Lets see Mr. Graves, five in a row and nine out of ten. Maybe Colin Cowherd was on to something when in July of 2006 he said “UVA football was the softest bunch of cream puff, bow tie wearing, brie cheese eating, ascot wearing wussies… There’s not a softer bunch of cookie dough eating weenies that the UVA football program. Those guys wear makeup to games.“ Come on Mr. Graves, grow a set. Its football! Its only a tea party in Charlottesville!
