We should not bailout auto companies
An open letter to Congress:

November 13, 2008

Blame should be given where it’s due
In a Nov. 7 letter, Phil Wintry tells us that “for God’s sake” Democrats should refrain from blaming President Bush for any problems in the future.
Volunteers needed at Habitat for Humanity
Times are tough ... and money is tight. But if you are looking for a way to help support good organizations – without cash donations, I would encourage you to volunteer your gift of service.
Remember to give thanks
Halloween has come and gone, and with its passing has come the annual onslaught that is the holiday season.

Supporters make big difference in journey
On Oct. 16, there was a walk for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in Charlottesville. I want to thank everyone who donated money to sponsor my brother, Eddie, and myself in this walk.
Graves should not forget others’ support
Graves should not forget others’ support
Nelson Graves continues to whine
Still whining after all this time. I made a small wager with a friend that regardless of the outcome of the presidential election, Nelson Graves would find some way to take a jab at white people.

Thank you to all who helped ‘fight for a cure’
Tennis has returned to the River City. What a delightful time was had by all who participated in the Cancer Tennis Tournament held recently on the new Ridgeview Park tennis courts.
Fearing for the future of the United States
While we were waiting for the final presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, I was writing this. I pray I’m wrong.
America is on the verge of being lost
Change! The mantra of Barack Obama. I question to what.

Sarah Palin not ready to lead the country
I voted early and by absentee ballot yesterday.
Media, fight for right to tough questions
“This cancellation is non-negotiable, and further opportunities for your station to interview with this campaign are unlikely, at best for the duration of the remaining days until the election,” wrote Laura K. McGinnis, Central Florida communications director for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign.
Sam Rasoul is brightest hope for change
“[T]he 20th century,” writes Alex Carey, “has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy.”

Tilt of Supreme Court rests on this election
I don’t remember when the differences between two presidential candidates have been so stark.
Obama will restore dignity to presidency
As a 10th generation Virginian, whose ancestors settled in the Valley more than 250 years ago, and who fought, died, toiled and labored for this great country, I write this letter afraid that we will continue to take our country down the road to ruin if we do not elect Barack Obama as president. Ask yourself, are you better off now than you were four or eight years ago?
Obama is the needed leader of our time
For readers still trying to get beyond the election rhetoric, I would like to share some reasons I will be voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden:

October 27, 2008

Supreme Court choices are vital
We are indeed blessed to live in America where we have enjoyed freedom.
Vote John McCain to save America
Please, people, vote to save America: John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Obama lacks moral substance
I am very disturbed to hear that some Christians will be voting for Barack Obama.

October 25, 2008

Is US ready for the kind of change Obama promises?
The catchword in the present political battle for president is change.
Think, America
When Barack Obama went to Germany, he told the German people that America is not what it could be or once was.

October 18, 2008

Obama’s platform not all that strong
Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign seems to focus on two primary subjects, tax policy and the economy and claiming that electing Republican John McCain means more of President Bush.
Praise for benevolent leaders
Despite the many naysayers and many negative comments about the fairness and the ability of federal bailout plans to right our economic ship, we are already seeing many positive results.

October 16, 2008

We need Rasoul’s fiscal conservatism
Sam Rasoul earns my vote for Congress on Nov. 4.
Obama’s abortion stance is proof enough
Third-graders in Virginia are taught that a human life begins with the union of sperm and egg, yet Sen. Barack Obama stated at Saddleback Church in California in August that the question of when life begins was “above his pay grade.”

Sam Rasoul will work for change
Sam Rasoul hasn’t been to Congress. Republican Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, the incumbent in the 6th District, has been there for 15 years (even though he pledged to serve no longer than 12 years).
Misleading headline reflects propaganda
Shame, shame on you for having the audacity to allow the titling of your front-page article by reporter Bob Stuart on Oct. 12 to read, “Retired military leaders say Obama is best choice.”
Leadership must live within its means
Last year, the voters of Waynesboro were asked to vote on putting a fire station on the west end (“Fire station’s exact scope still on table,” Oct. 15). Perhaps the question was misstated. Perhaps they were saying they wanted to be sure of good fire protection. What will the costs of a new firehouse, the equipment to put in it and the personnel to man it through their retirement be? How many tens of millions of dollars? Does anybody know?

Augusta County athletes are blessed
As we go from one sport to another, I would like to take time to let the community of Fishersville know how blessed we are to have our young athletes growing up here. We have one coach (a father and husband), Tom Shumate Jr., who is a real asset to the kids who have had him as their coach and leader.
Palin signs reflect a double standard
It appears that the Republicans have another double standard when it comes to referring to their vice presidential candidate (“Voting for the chick,” Oct. 13).
