A much-needed pledge

It was wonderful to see that state Senate candidate Scott Sayre signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge of the Americans for Tax Reform. That organization was started at the request of Ronald Reagan in 1985. Sayre stated: "The pledge is just one more demonstration of my desire to hold the line on taxes, stop out-of-control spending and, instead of constantly raising state taxes, to provide common-sense solutions to our real needs.

"Working men and women know that we are not taxed too little. The budget of the state of Virginia has increased every year, at a pace far greater than inflation since 1996. We have to spend money for the common good, but we need politicians, like Ronald Reagan and Scott Sayre, who are brave enough to know when to say 'Stop.' Bringing home pork from Richmond or D.C. costs us a whole lot more than buying a pig right here at home. We send more money to the capitols; then we ever get back."
