This is in reference to the closing statement of Councilwoman Lorie Smith during the open City Council meeting of May 2, regarding the Wayne Theatre project.

She stated that she had received a great number of telephone calls and e-mails supporting the council's decision. If we are to believe this, she has to produce names, addresses, and telephone numbers for the record, otherwise it is pure speculation. After all, the majority of the people voiced their opposition at that meeting. This is a recorded fact and not a speculative one.

A referendum by the people of Waynesboro would be the most satisfying, and a democratic way to obtain a fair and accurate decision for this project. Any other method will be a mockery of what we call "democracy."

If Nancy and Lori and the Mayor are so very sure that the count for the Wayne Theater is 50/50 then by all means, they would not object to putting it on the next ballot. Then they will know for certain how the people really feel, no question! If the council wants to spend the taxpayer's money, then give all the taxpayers of Waynesboro a chance, not just a chosen few, to express their views. What could be more fair than that-

The budget is too high. Many citizens are hurting with so many costs going up. We must live on tighter budgets, so should the city.

Children will be hurt, young families will be hurt, seniors will be hurt.

Seniors live on declining incomes; it's time for "The Waynesboro Tea Party."

I challenge the city council to do the right thing. Put the budget in the citizens' hands.
Put it on the ballot box:Board of Education, City Budget, or the Wayne Theatre.
