Embarrassed by council's spending
After reading the article on July 10, "Minority gains power on City Council," I noted that Councilwoman Lorie Smith said she was embarrassed by the condition of some city equipment.
I was wondering, maybe she might not be so embarrassed if only she had voted to give the taxpayers' money for city equipment, rather than to the Wayne Theatre Alliance.
This would have benefited the majority and not the chosen few.

Rec money could be better spent
Augusta County needs to think long and hard before more than $5 million of our tax dollars are spent on building a recreation center.
If that kind of money is available, then we are paying way too much in real estate taxes. Maybe this is why only two of our supervisors - Pastures District Supervisor Tracy Pyles and North River District Supervisor Larry Howdyshell - voted to lower our tax rates.
If that kind of money is available, then spend it in our local communities to improve our ball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts and programs for our youth, plus aid public safety even more with additional deputies and paid emergency medical services personnel.
Also, give the teachers a raise.
A middle school is needed up in the Riverheads area. Some of this $5 million should go toward that as well.
One day the county courthouse will be in Verona, not Staunton. Where will that money come from-
