Stormwater officials quick, eager to help

This is a thank you to two nice people.

First, Stormwater Management Director Bert Smith. When I first came to his office to discuss the stormwater issue in our section of the city (Bayard Avenue), he didn't say, "I'm busy now, you can make an appointment" or "I'll get back with you. Leave your phone number." Instead, Smith was very curious and interested in my problems and questions. He went over every issue with maps and brochures and answered all of the questions that he could.

Now this was really something: When Smith said he would get a few staffers and would come over and take a look at the water situation, he did so.

Staffers talked about the drain pipes, size and water runoff and what the city hopes to do about it.  My point is Smith took his time and effort to look and explain. Later, when we had more rain, he was out checking alley and street drains and having them cleaned and inspected.

This man is an asset and a team player. Waynesboro is lucky to have him.

Also, thanks to Assistant City Manager Mike Hamp for his concern, helpfulness and advice. He also has been over here and observed the damage.  Thank you both for being the kind of people we can actually talk to about problems.

From one flooded basement owner, we definitely need the stormwater project.

Vote Coleman in November

I am writing to show my support for Wendell Coleman in the upcoming November election.

Although he is running unopposed for the Augusta County board of supervisors, I encourage all residents of the Wayne District to cast their vote for Coleman.

He works extremely hard, not only for the Wayne District, but also for all Augusta County residents.

He listens to all concerns and does everything he can to resolve issues. He does not let the "ball get dropped" or something get "lost in the shuffle." NO ONE WORKS HARDER for the citizens of Augusta County than Wendell Coleman!

Here are just a few projects that Coleman has helped bring about or been an integral part:

* Construction of Wilson Middle School

* Major renovations of Wilson and Stuarts Draft High School

* Increase teacher pay

* Expansion of Hershey plant

* Full-time fire company staff added

* Children's wing added to Augusta County Library

* Comprehensive plan updated that directs growth and development where we want it and not where we don't want it ("smart growth")

In 2003, Coleman promised to listen to us, share our vision and work to the best of his ability to enhance the quality of life in Augusta County. Coleman has done all that he has promised and then some.

I feel confident that he will continue to fulfill and exceed those promises. Coleman takes his job as a representative very seriously. He doesn't just give us "lip service" or tell us what we may sometimes want to hear. Coleman is a doer.

He takes responsibility and does not "pass the buck."

I am both honored and privileged to have Coleman represent us, and I hope that all Wayne District residents will show their continued support for Coleman by reelecting him to the board of supervisors.

Farmer's family offers thanks

Our family wishes to thank The News Virginian, Sage Merritt and Rosanne Weber for the news article and pictures, published August 19, quoting our husband, father and grandfather, Robert E. McCune.

He has worked very hard all of his life as a farmer in Augusta County and recognition of his efforts are long overdue.

This article is a "keepsake" for the future generations, although there will be no land for them to farm, as "progress" consumes the land around us for development.

Thank you. We did not know we had so many friends to acknowledge his efforts.
