Regarding the question about whether to allow people to carry concealed weapons in national parks (“Parks want opinions on new gun law,” May 8):
Yes, because you can bet the poachers and criminals already have their guns with them in there. To deny law-abiding citizens their right to carry, for which we have submitted to background checks, makes no sense. For instance, I was trained by the Marine Corps, issued a weapon and expected to use it. Now, I have a concealed-carry permit that is OK with the FBI and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Department. Where do park officials come off saying I pose a danger to the community? As a 60-year-old Vietnam veteran with no criminal record who carries and shoots responsibly, I fail to see that it is anything but a turf battle between rival federal agencies. Yes, for heaven’s sake, let permit holders carry in the parks; it will provide some badly needed balance between the armed criminals and society.

Yea, last time I was in the park, the gang of bears and deers were having a gun battle near Big Meadows. So much criminal activity in the park aside from poaching. I say NO!! Yes poachers will have their weapons, but that is why we have park rangers. Of course, the Republicans keep cutting funding for the parks and the rangers are out manned and out gunned, so let’s dedicate more money so we can reverse this trend. All these people who find this false security in carrying a weapon, mostly pistols frightens me because they are not trained and what happens at the shooting range is far different than what happens in real life. All guns banned form the park except by those trained for real life situations.
