RICHMOND — Gov. Tim Kaine has announced how he is fulfilling a legislative mandate to slash spending by $35 million over the next two years.
Spending reductions in the fiscal year that ended June 30 bring the total savings to $49 million. The state’s two-year budget totals about $77 billion.
Kaine says the budget approved by legislators last winter left it to him to find savings. He says those reductions include about $9 million on discretionary items like travel, training, supplies and equipment. An additional $7 million comes from reducing personnel costs through deferred hiring and elimination of 18 jobs.
On Monday, the governor will address the General Assembly’s money committees on the final revenue numbers for the 2008 fiscal year.
