NEW YORK — When Big Brown turned for home, something wasn’t right.
Jockey Kent Desormeaux knew the big bay colt was finished. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., who guaranteed racing’s first Triple Crown in 30 years, knew it then, too.
Big Brown straggled home last Saturday, losing the Belmont Stakes to 38-1 long shot Da’ Tara. Eased up in the homestretch, he was so far behind at the end that his margin of defeat wasn’t even charted.

BALTIMORE — Big Brown charged to the lead turning for home and then cruised down the stretch to win the Preakness on Saturday, still perfect and squarely pointed toward thoroughbred racing’s first Triple Crown in 30 years.
“We should have enough horse to get the job done,” said trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., who had predicted his bay colt would win the first two legs.

COLUMN: No cards for Eight Belles

There won’t be a dramatic fight for life this time around. No national day of mourning for a brave horse who wouldn’t give up.
Schoolchildren won’t be sending cards.
The people who cried for Eight Belles got it out of the way at the track. They had no choice, because the business of racing goes on.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Big Brown backed up his trainer’s boasts with an explosive finishing kick and won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday — a day marred by the fatal breakdown of the filly Eight Belles.
The cheers for the winner’s decisive victory were cut short when Eight Belles, the runner-up, was euthanized on the track minutes after the race when she collapsed with two broken front ankles.
