COLUMN: Mothers, daughters and best friends

My mom called me on Friday afternoon from my youngest brother’s high school graduation reception, back home in western Nebraska. “Well, Cody’s officially getting a diploma,” she said. I could hear the rest of my notoriously loud family in the background, telling jokes at Cody’s expense. “Do you want to tell him congratulations?”
