Giants finish perfect S. Valley season with tourney win

Waynesboro coach Bill Meicke pumped his fists and jumped out from the coaches box after the Little Giants soccer team was crowned the Southern Valley District tournament champs, routing Stuarts Draft 5-0 Wednesday night in the tournament championship game. With the win the Little Giants finished with a perfect 10-0 Southern Valley District record. The Little Giants will head into the Region III tournament as the No. 1 seed from the district and will host a team to be announced.

In Fort Defiance, Stuarts Draft scored an upset over No. 2 Fort Defiance on Friday night in the first round of the Southern Valley boys soccer tournament, earning a 2-1 win. The Cougars’ Justin Orzech scored both goals including the game winner with four minutes to play.

Key, Sundeen will play at Ferrum

STUARTS DRAFT — Sit back, relax and play it cool. That’s what Riverhead forward Chris Key and Stuarts Draft keeper Matt Sundeen demonstrated after they both committed to play soccer at Ferrum College next season. “It feels good that somebody wants you to play for them,” Sundeen said. “I thought it would be fun and a good opportunity to play college soccer.” Sitting with Sundeen was long-time friend Key, he was unruffled as he talked about the beginning of his colligate career.

Draft blanks Blazers in the rain

STUARTS DRAFT — Keeper Matt Sundeen said earlier in the week that he was going to finish his senior year for Draft well. After the Cougars 1-0 shutout against Spotswood on Friday night showed that he was true to his word. “It was a hard fought game on both ends,” Sundeen said. “But our defense was there and we made it happen, especially defenders Josh Coble and Chris Mahanes, fought hard all night.”

Draft’s Wood heading to Bridgewater pitch

No flash. No dash. No cameras. Just another student heading off to college to play soccer. It was quiet affair that mirrored the personality of Alex Wood, the Bridgewater-bound Stuarts Draft boys soccer player.
