Giants’ rally punches semifinal ticket
Jeremy Hahn and Joseph Lucas are usually associated with great pitching. Last night, it was their hitting. Both players played key roles in the sixth inning as Waynesboro rallied to steal a 3-2 Region III quarterfinal win over visiting William Byrd at Kate Collins Field Tuesday.May 22, 2008
SACCO: Fort, Spotts win with handshake and smile
Forget Turner Ashby and those other baseball teams up north that decided to jump ship, form their own district and give it a cool name. Forget those days, they’re gone. Close your eyes tight and wish with all your might. They ain’t ever coming back. There’s a new heated rivalry in town that doesn’t involve Knights, male turkeys or those who blaze new trails into the Shenandoah Valley. Good bye streaks of blue.Fort holds off Giants to win tourney
Fort Defiance ran out to a six-run lead but had to hold off a surging Waynesboro squad in the seventh inning to grab an 11-9 win and the Southern Valley District baseball tournament championship at the KC on Thursday. The Indians blitzed three Waynesboro pitchers for 17 hits and needed almost all of them to keep the top seed at bay.May 16, 2008
Giants advance to finals
With Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ with Disaster” blasting between innings, Waynesboro’s Joseph Lucas was flirting with a no-hitter as the Little Giants dismantled Rockbridge 6-2 in Southern Valley District baseball tournament action at Kate Collins Field on Friday. Lucas lost his no-no and his perfect game with one out in the fifth inning when Wildcats’ pitcher Ryan Miller drilled a 0-1 curveball to center. Waynesboro sweeps TA
Turner Ashby thought its game against Waynesboro started at 7 p.m., but late in the afternoon were told the game started at 6 p.m. The Knights made it to the KC in time, but they didn’t show up until late. “We thought the game was at seven and we found out at four it wasn’t,” said TA coach Ritchie Anderson. “We came down here and [the Little Giants] were ready.”May 06, 2008
SACCO: Lucas’ long road to a win at TA
It didn’t hit Joseph Lucas until the Little Giants shook hands with the Knights after Monday’s game. That’s when it slapped him in the face like a hot shot back to the mound. That’s when he let out a sigh and realized what he and the Little Giants had done. “We were walking down to have our [post game] meeting and it hit me,” the 16-year-old said Tuesday before practice. “We just beat Turner Ashby.”The Daily Pooch Punt: The Little Giants cometh
Don’t blame them if they, like Jim Critzer said, celebrated like they just won a state title. This was Turner Ashby, after all, the Valley’s version of baseball’s Evil Empire.Waynesboro upends Turner Ashby
Three two-run home runs were still not enough for Turner Ashby to get past up-swinging Waynesboro. The Little Giants defeated the Knights in Bridgewater 7-6 late Monday after a five-run fourth gave them the lead and the momentum.May 03, 2008
‘Heart and character’
FORT DEFIANCE When Waynesboro’s season started, unknowns were the only thing that the team expected. Who would take over as the top pitcher? Who would fill in behind the plate? Who would bat No. 1 and No. 2? Could the team win the Southern Valley District? A slow start, a few changes and a couple of months later, the Little Giants earned the district crown and the guaranteed Region III berth.May 02, 2008
