While most of the Valley has turned its attention to the upcoming football season, members of the Waynesboro varsity boys soccer team are looking ahead not to March 2009, but to long after they hang up their purple jerseys.

Lord Botetourt outhustles Giants in region quarters

Intensity and drive were visible from only one side of the field on Tuesday as Lord Botetourt defeated Waynesboro 1-0 in the Region III quarterfinal round. An early goal was all that the Cavaliers needed to see them through to the end of the game. “This win was huge for us and that goal carried us through,” Lord Botetourt coach Glenn Hayman said. Though both teams were evenly matched, the Cavaliers commanded the field with their hustle. The Little Giants lacked intensity up until the final five minutes of play.

Giants finish perfect S. Valley season with tourney win

Waynesboro coach Bill Meicke pumped his fists and jumped out from the coaches box after the Little Giants soccer team was crowned the Southern Valley District tournament champs, routing Stuarts Draft 5-0 Wednesday night in the tournament championship game. With the win the Little Giants finished with a perfect 10-0 Southern Valley District record. The Little Giants will head into the Region III tournament as the No. 1 seed from the district and will host a team to be announced.

Life without Alibekov

The midday sun’s glare was relentless on the pitch at Waynesboro. A breeze intermittingly swept across the field and feathered the jagged grass. It was a perfect time to discuss the Waynesboro boys soccer squad, its solid year and its playoff run.
