Walter, Brown place 2nd, 3rd at states

HARRISONBURG – Stuarts Draft’s Christina Fenske was easy to find at the Group AA track and field championship on Friday night. Her rainbow-colored knee socks were not easily missed and neither was her domination in high jump. Fenske placed first with a 5-foot, 4-inch jump. “I joined track two years ago. I really wasn’t into it that much,” Fenske said. “But I really started to love it – especially the high jump. I finished last year in ninth place, so to place first is really exciting.”

R.E. Lee tops S. Valley squads

LYNCHBURG — With the Region III girls track and field team championship in the balance, the anchor runners from Brookville, Heritage and Turner Ashby crashed across the finish line simultaneously in Saturday’s meet-ending 1,600-meter relay at Liberty University. Clinging to a two-point lead on Brookville, Pioneers sprinter Amanda Wimbush passed Bees’ distance runner Janel Reeves on the back stretch and barely held off a strong kick from Reeves while TA’s Molly Skidmore skidded across the finish line in first place by a baton’s length.

Lee boys, Fort girls win Southern Valley track meet

Waynesboro’s Tim Brown, no doubt, earned the nickname “Slick” for his laid-back approach to life. On Friday, at the inaugural Southern Valley District outdoor track and field meet, the stone-faced senior managed to contort his face into a smile and open his eyes wide in excitement. He’s wanted to hit 45 feet on the triple jump for quite some time and in windy and cold conditions at his home track, he nailed it. Though it took some convincing from Little Giant jump coach Charlie Cox.

Teams prepare for the postseason

FORT DEFIANCE — Fort Defiance’s Katie Cummings’ last throw rattled off the net that protected spectators from errant discus throws. It wasn’t the way that the Indians’ all-time leading point scorer wanted to go out during her last home meet, but she still walked away with a first place finish. “It’s really exciting,” Cummings said. “I didn’t expect to lose, but it would have been nice to get a [personal best]”

Giants split longtime coach’s final regular-season home meet

Mondays — no one likes them, and the Waynesboro track team was not exempt. Fatigue settled on the faces of runners as they battled the energy-draining sun during the Little Giants’ meet against Fluvanna.

COLUMN: Next year won’t be the same

In Chase Hughes’ mind, it’s already set up. He can see a small sign on the chain-link fence near the parking lot, letting any and all who enter the Waynesboro track know whom it’s named after. Then, he says pointing to the small storage house on the far side of the straightaway, there would be a much bigger sign over there.
