Waynesboro may be the regular season Southern Division champions, but the quest for a second playoff title fell short after the Generals fell 6-0 to a powerful Covington team 6-0 Saturday night.
The win advanced the Lumberjacks into the Valley League championship game.
Waynesboro starter Adam Liberatore took the ball for the Generals on three days rest.
“It was a championship effort by Liberatore,” Waynesboro coach Lawrence Nesselrodt said. “He wanted the ball on three days rest. We normally give guys five days rest and he pitched one heck of a ballgame.”
Liberatore was pitching a no-hitter until the fifth inning when Joe Van Meter led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.
The Lumberjacks got to a tired Liberatore in the sixth inning when Liberatore walked the bases loaded.
Van Meter’s groundball to Evan Webb was thrown into right field allowing two runs to score on the error.
Kaleb Fleck was called in from the bullpen.
Fleck gave up back-to-back RBI singles by Derrick Washington and Evan Noell before striking out Junior Arrojo to end the inning with the ‘Jacks holding a 6-0 lead.
Covington pitcher Jeremiah Meiners could do no wrong, pitching the second complete game for the Lumberjacks in as many days.
“We just ran into a buzz saw,” Nesselrodt joked. “They played great baseball and got the key pitch when they needed it.”
Meiners struck out four while walking one, giving up four hits.
“I’m very proud of these guys,” Nesselrodt added. “They are still champions. It is hard to three-peat and these guys will be defending Southern Division champions when next season starts.”
