Winning the South Division title — their third straight — was even sweeter this year for the Generals.
“We had some major roster changes. We had guys that stepped it up and have done the job for us,” coach Lawrence Nesselrodt said. “It is quite an accomplishment for us to win this again. Our goal this year was to be the best summer league in the country.”
Nesselrodt and his team are close to that goal. The Generals were ranked ninth in the country as of Tuesday, according to http://www.PGcrosschecker.com.
Though the roster changed, Nesselrodt picked up a gem — Derek Hamblen.
“Derek was brought in as a temporary because of all the roster changes,” Nesselrodt said. “We needed some healthy bodies. He was recommended by one of our stars from last season, Jimmy Stanley. He has done an amazing job for us.”
Hamblen inked a two-week contract on May 30 to play with the Generals. By the time his commitment was over he had earned a permanent spot on the roster.
“I didn’t worry or put too much pressure on myself,” Hamblen said. “I had the opportunity to play, and if it worked out, then it worked out. This has been an amazing experience.”
Additions like Hamblen are why Nesselrodt thinks the Generals repeated as regular season champs.
“Derek has not only earned a spot on the team, but a spot in the line up,” Nesselrodt said. “That’s what made us champions this year. The young guys see the chemistry on the team and know what the expectations are. Making an investment in young players makes a team. I always use this quote, ‘Those who invest the most will be the last to surrender.’ ”
Hamblen gladly took the opportunity to wear a Generals jersey.
“Coach Ness gave me a shot and I’m trying to work hard. I love playing baseball. It’s my first summer coming out,” Hamblen said. “It has been awesome to be part of a team like this.”
Nesselrodt was just grateful.
“The Lord has really blessed us. I really have to say that first. Of the entire group that I have coached in the last three years, this group was just as surprising,” he said.
