“I tell the guys,” Waynesboro coach Lawrence Nesselrodt said. “ ‘75% of the time the winning team scores more runs in one inning than the other team scores the entire game’.”
That quote rang true as Waynesboro twice scored the same amount, if not more than Woodstock, defeating the River Bandits 11-3 at the KC Saturday night.
Andy Altemus got the start for the Generals on the mound.
Altemus bounced back from a previous rough start against Front Royal to pitch seven innings of low-stress baseball, establishing his pace to strike out seven River Bandits.
“Andy’s just a winner,” Nesselrodt said. “He’s a joy, as far as a coach, to know you can put a guy out there that’s really thinking about the game.”
Altemus allowed one hit over the first three innings, striking out five while keeping Woodstock on itstoes in the batter’s box.
“It’s all about pace of play,” Altemus said. “If I make my pace of play and they don’t define their pace of play, then I’m in control.”
The Generals bats supplied the insurance for Altemus, scoring three runs in the fifth and five runs in the seventh.
The first two General hitters in the fifth, Mark Dvoroznak and Gabriel Saade reached base for the heart of the order.
After Evan Webb grounded out, allowing the runners to advance to second and third, a Ryan Adams single to right plated both General speedsters.
Grant Buckner followed Adams with a RBI double to give the home team a 5-0 lead midway through the game.
“I’m ecstatic with the way the guys bounced back tonight,” Nesselrodt said.
There was no bounce back for the River Bandits as the Generals swung the heavy lumber in the seventh as well.
Adams, Buckner, and Michael Parker all reached to load the bases with no outs.
Greg Meleski was hit by a pitch to plate Adams, and after two ground-ball force outs at home, Dvoroznak, Saade, and Webb singled to score four runs over the course of three at bats.
“[Having the offense] was nice,” Altemus said. “I liked it. I was able to keep my poise tonight and it’s a lot easier to pitch at home.”
The Generals defend the home grass again tonight against Front Royal in a 7:30 bout at the KC.
