Playing in its third consecutive Region B semifinal, Chatham finally got over the hump with a 14-2 victory over Riverheads on Thursday night to lock up a berth into next week’s Group A tournament.

STRASBURG — The nature of playing small ball is to put pressure on the other team. A winning baseball club with a spotty defense most of the season, Strasburg’s shortcomings in the field came to the surface again in Wednesday night’s Region B quarterfinals game with Riverheads.

FORT DEFIANCE — The Indians were knocked out of Region III play Wednesday night by William Byrd Terriers. In a nail-biting seven innings, the Terriers came out on top 7-6.

STUARTS DRAFT – Buffalo Gap picked the wrong time to start struggling at the plate with runners in scoring position.

Buffalo Gap’s Region B baseball game against Madison County has been moved from Swoope to the baseball field at Stuarts Draft High School. The start time will be 6 p.m.

FORT DEFIANCE – When Fort Defiance got leadoff hitters aboard they brought them in — and then some — drubbing Stuarts Draft 14-4 to win the Shenandoah Valley District tournament Thursday.

The momentum from the first batter lasted up until the very last for Robert E. Lee as it beat Waynesboro 9-2 in the Southern Valley District consolation game on Thursday to gain the final Region III bid. This will be the first time the Leemen have made the region tournament in nine years.

HARRISONBURG — It took extra innings, but in the biggest game in the Shenandoah District between two bitter rivals, it all seemed fitting as Buffalo Gap took down Riverheads 5-4 in eight innings for the title Thursday night.

Riverheads’ junior pitcher Cody Montgomery made sure that his senior teammates live to play another day. Montgomery pitched a three-hitter and went 5-5 at the plate as the Gladiators advanced to the championship game of the Shenandoah District baseball tournament.

Fort Defiance lefthander Blake Sipe mixed a curve and fastball Tuesday to limit R.E. Lee to four hits and pitch the Indians into the Southern Valley District tournament finals with a 9-0 win.

Buffalo Gap rode two late-inning bursts at the plate, pulling away from Page County in the fifth inning for a 4-2 win, advancing to the Shenandoah District tournament championship game.

In Stuarts Draft, Ricky Dimitt sent a 1-1 offering from Joseph Lucas over the fence in deep left center to give the Cougars’ a 2-1 win over Waynesboro in nine innings.

FISHERSVILLE — On Tuesday, Wilson Memorial had a chance to win the Shenandoah District outright. On Friday, the Green Hornets were turning in their jerseys.

Early scoring opportunities took Stuarts Draft to an 11-3 win over Waynesboro on Thursday.

In Waynesboro, the Little Giants baseball team scored 9-0 and 4-3 wins in a twinbill with Rockbridge on Wednesday, eliminating the Wildcats and making it an all City/County Southern Valley District tournament.

Wilson Memorial and Luray both went into Tuesday evening’s double header with a chance to force a one-game playoff with Buffalo Gap for Shenandoah regular-season title.

In Greenville, the Buffalo Gap baseball team blew open a close game with seven runs in the final three innings to beat Riverheads 11-2 to earn either at least a tie for the Shenandoah District regular season title.

In Fishersville, Luray took the first game 6-3 over Wilson Memorial, but the Green Hornets baseball team bounced back to win the second game 4-2.

The Riverheads baseball team kept its shot at the Shenandoah District title alive on Monday, taking advantage of a costly Stonewall Jackson error in the fourth inning to pick up a 5-1 win.

SWOOPE — It took two good pitching efforts and key runs in the fourth and sixth, but Buffalo Gap knocked off Wilson 7-5 on Monday night.
