Stuarts Draft locks up Region III berth
STUARTS DRAFT — The weather was off and on throughout the evening, but Stuarts Draft was dead on. Timely hitting, great defense and four shutout innings by Seth Via set the tone for a 12-0 win over Rockbridge County in the Southern Valley consolation game. The win gave the Cougars a bid in the regional tournament next week when they will hit the road to face an opponent yet to be named.

Hornets upset the Bison
All along Wilson Memorial coach Derek McDaniel knew his team could win and on Monday night it showed. Wilson pitcher Alex Fisher allowed only one Buffalo Gap hit in the Shenandoah District semifinals to lead the Green Hornets to a 1-0 win and a Region B tournament berth.

In Fishersville, Wilson Memorial won its first round game in the Shenandoah District baseball tournament 6-4 against Stonewall jackson and earned a second round date with Buffalo Gap.

Fort Defiance locks up Region III berth FORT DEFIANCE – The Fort Defiance game plan of early scoring took them to a 6-1 win over Stuarts Draft in the first round of the Southern Valley District tournament on Friday. The Indians got on the board early in the first after a three up, three down defensive inning. Fort’s Blake Sipe smacked one to the Draft shortstop, who then let it roll into the outfield. The Indians’ Justin Chittum’s sacrifice bunt then moved Sipe to second and Michael Wade drove him in with a hard grounder up the middle.
Bulldogs win district tiebreaker
BRIDGEWATER — All though Buffalo Gap stormed out to a 4-0 lead, the Bison couldn’t hold on as Luray won the Shenandoah District tournament playoff game 6-5 Friday night. The exciting loss sent Buffalo Gap into Monday’s tournament semifinals against Wilson Memorial. The game will be held at Harrisonburg High School at 7 p.m. A walk to the Bison’s Ryan Sheridan got the Gap rally started in the top of the second. With one out, back-to-back doubles by Austin Bowers and J.R. Hart brought in two runs. The Bison scored twice more courtesy of a pair of infield errors by the Bulldogs.
Giants advance to finals
Giants advance to finals With Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ with Disaster” blasting between innings, Waynesboro’s Joseph Lucas was flirting with a no-hitter as the Little Giants dismantled Rockbridge 6-2 in Southern Valley District baseball tournament action at Kate Collins Field on Friday. Lucas lost his no-no and his perfect game with one out in the fifth inning when Wildcats’ pitcher Ryan Miller drilled a 0-1 curveball to center. But the junior lefty finished with a three-hitter and struck out 12 to take the win.

Wilson drops Page FISHERSVILLE – Wilson Memorial’s rally in the fifth inning secured a 5-4 win over Page County on Wednesday. The Hornet’s Alex Fisher commanded both the mound and the batter’s box in the first, throwing nothing but strikes on defense and batting in an early RBI on offense to start the game. Page’s poor hitting kept them out of the game for the first three innings.

Wenger breaks Gap’s home run record
SWOOPE – Josh Wenger broke the Buffalo Gap High School record for most home runs recorded in a single season hitting his ninth of the year in Gap’s 10-0 win against Riverheads on Tuesday. It took 15-years for the home run record to be broken but Wenger just shook it off as another hit, but did crack a smile.
Waynesboro sweeps TA
Waynesboro sweeps TA Turner Ashby thought its game against Waynesboro started at 7 p.m., but late in the afternoon were told the game started at 6 p.m. The Knights made it to the KC in time, but they didn’t show up until late. “We thought the game was at seven and we found out at four it wasn’t,” said TA coach Ritchie Anderson. “We came down here and [the Little Giants] were ready.”

Fort’s Britt signs with Bluefield FORT DEFIANCE — Fort Defiance first baseman Sean Britt signed to play at Bluefield College on Friday afternoon. Britt will join former Fort Defiance shortstop Travis Weaver, who first introduced him to the Rams and their coaching staff. “I’m just real excited to be able to go down there and continue to play with my friends,” Britt said. “I’m very happy to be able to play in college and at that level.” This season Britt is batting with a .350 average and Rams’ assistant coach Stephen Baker is looking for the left-handed batter to generate offense for his club next season in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Fort wins after big fourth STUARTS DRAFT – Draft Senior night was going well for the Cougars. Players were given T-shirts from their youth baseball coach with their former jersey numbers and nicknames before the game. Smiles were exchanged on the field during the pre-game ceremonies. Those smiles quickly faded after Fort Defiance rallied for four runs at the top of the fourth and rode on to win the Southern Valley District match 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Three two-run home runs were still not enough for Turner Ashby to get past up-swinging Waynesboro. The Little Giants defeated the Knights in Bridgewater 7-6 late Monday after a five-run fourth gave them the lead and the momentum.

‘Heart and character’ FORT DEFIANCE When Waynesboro’s season started, unknowns were the only thing that the team expected. Who would take over as the top pitcher? Who would fill in behind the plate? Who would bat No. 1 and No. 2? Could the team win the Southern Valley District? A slow start, a few changes and a couple of months later, the Little Giants earned the district crown and the guaranteed Region III berth.

Hornets trump Pride GREENVILLE – Alex Fisher grinned from the pitcher’s mound into the Wilson Memorial dugout after his 4-2 victory over Riverheads on Friday afternoon. He passed by his teammates and shared high-fives and cheers. The senior did not have to explain what his reasons were — but his stats did. He threw one-hit ball until the sixth inning and struck 10 before he packed his bags to go home.

Giants win Southern Valley title FORT DEFIANCE — Waynesboro entered the seventh inning with its Southern Valley District championship hopes almost broken as it trailed Fort Defiance 4-2. The Little Giants’ bats were cold for most of the night, but they strung together a seven-run inning to pick up a 9-4 win and clinch the inaugural Southern Valley baseball title.

Bison knock off Luray SWOOPE — All season long, the Luray bats have been booming. Thursday night, Buffalo Gap cut their volume down a bit, as the Bison defeated the previously undefeated Bulldogs 7-3 to pull within a game of the top spot in the Shenandoah District.

Luray rocks Wilson FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial had Luray in a stalemate, holding onto a 1-1 tie against Shenandoah’s No. 1 team. After battling for five innings a couple of Wilson mistakes turned into an eight-run Bulldog inning that led to a 10-2 Luray win. “Six out of seven innings we played with them, but a couple of mistakes early in [the fifth] just snowballed,” said Wilson coach Derek McDaniel. “That just busted it open.”

FISHERSVILLE –The Wilson Memorial baseball team could not stop Luray on Friday afternoon, but the ankle-high puddles, downpours and lightning strikes did. It took was less than one inning for the Bulldogs to leap ahead of the Green Hornets after Luray capitalized on two infield errors and a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead before the game was called due to the weather.

GREENVILLE — When Buffalo Gap and Riverheads meet, they always bring their best, with the hope of knocking off a fierce rival. During Thursday’s Shenandoah District battle on the diamond, things were no different. The Bison won the bout 3-2, but were pressured all seven innings by the Gladiators.

Despite giving up an unearned run in the second inning, the Waynesboro hurler tossed his first career no-hitter as the Little Giants dismantled Robert E.
