Waynesboro JV boys basketball coach Sidney Diggs will replace Doug Charlie as a varsity assistant coach The News Virginian has learned. Charlie stepped down after the last school term.

“I was with JV for the last four years and I am very happy about the move to varsity,” Diggs said. “I just want to help the program the best way I can, and I’m happy to be able to work with coach [C. Jay] DeWitt,” Diggs said. “It feels good. My goal is to help take this team to districts again.”

Diggs was Waynesboro’s first choice

“After Doug retired, Sidney was the first choice,” said Waynesboro Athletic Director Mel Morris.

John Hull will take over as the boys JV coach. Hull was also named as the Giants varsity softball coach on Sept. 22.

The Little Giants have reached the Group AA tournament the past two seasons.

“I’ve coached him and I’ve seen him and watched him grow up. He has paid his dues,” DeWitt said. “Pop [Diggs] is familiar with the system and familiar with me.”
