STAUNTON – Less than a year after getting ousted by Stuarts Draft in the Region III semifinals, the R.E. Lee football team looked solid as it controlled the tempo of its scrimmage against Heritage-Lynchburg on Saturday night at Gypsy Hill Park.
At press time, the score was 42-13 in favor of the Leemen.
The Leemen built a 21-6 lead over the Pioneers with the first quarter score of 14-6 setting the tone. That was the Pioneers’ only touchdown for the remainder of the first half of the game.
Meanwhile, the Leemen were not done controlling the ball and feasting on opportunities. Devante White added a touchdown and the extra point put the home team 15 points ahead of the visitors from Lynchburg 21-6. They sealed it again adding another touch down at 8:34 28-6 lead.
Although, there were no stats, no rosters, Lee played appeared to be in postseason mode just one week into the training camp.
Lee kept the second quarter going when Michael Carper ran to the 40 yard line and running back Kameron Jenkins sprinted to the end zone and the extra point made it 28-6 in the Lee’s favor. Running back Mark Anderson ran 58 yards to the end zone to add more distance between the squads, making it 35-6 going into the half.
When the Pioneers returned, they added their second touchdown on the night, but Terrell Mickens countered with a score to make it 42-13 in the third quarter.
