FORT DEFIANCE—Fort Defiance fought against heavy winds and rains, but it could not stop Harrisonburg’s dominance as the Blue Streaks ousted the Indians 28-0 at home on Friday night.
The Blue Streaks were led by Michael Holmes’ two touchdowns.
“I felt that we were in control of the game,” Holmes said. “I could not have done this without my offensive line. They helped to make this win happen. I’m very happy about how well we played.”
The Streaks jumped on the board early with a safety at 9:24. A few minutes later Holmes ran down the edge of the field for a touchdown. It started to look like the game was tilting in Fort’s favor in the second quarter when Ryan Hutsenpiller had an interception. Later that quarter, Fort had another opportunity when Jordan Parker had a fumble recovery on the 23-yard line. The Indians could not take advantage of the turnovers, punting both times.
“Harrisonburg played a tough game,” said Fort coach Dale Spitzer. “We just could not take advantage of the situation tonight. I think our kids played very hard.”
Going in to the half, Fort was down by eight points. They were closely matched with Blue Streaks in yards. Fort compiled 77 yards, while the Streaks reached 79 before they left for the locker room
The third gave the Blue Streaks another touchdown compliment of Holmes. With the extra point tacked on, Harrisonburg led 15-0. The fourth quarter did not go any better for Fort (1-3) — the visitors added another touchdown at 7:02 for the 21-0 lead.
Harrisonburg continued to pummel the Indians defense by adding a touchdown with 19.6 seconds left in the quarter by Jake Johnson. The extra point sealed the game 28-0.
Holmes did not give himself any props.
“We worked hard as a team, that’s all I can say,” Holmes said. “All of us deserve the credit.”
