NEW MARKET — While the team golf title had already been determined in the Shenandoah District, with Stonewall Jackson taking top honors, the individual honors were still being contested.
Wilson Memorial’s Adam Underwood fired an 81 Monday at Shenvalee Golf Club, defeating Stonewall’s Corey Roadcap by a single stroke to come away with the Player of the Year Award.
In addition, the Green Hornets a collective 358 to take the second district team bid to the Region B Tournament at Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville in two weeks, five strokes ahead of hard-charging Riverheads.
“We made it interesting,” said Riverheads’s coach Scott Cassell. “I was pretty pleased with a third-place finish.”
Also medaling in the top six were Skyler Shupe of Riverheads and Coleman Johnson of Stonewall with 83’s, Buffalo Gap’s Emily Workman, who fired an 85 and Stonewall’s Tyler Barb, who finished at 87.
The other golfers who counted for Wilson were Tyler Wade (89), Trent Johnson (93) and Richard Suyes (95).
After the Stonewall and Wilson scores were counted, the top six individuals from the other four district schools qualified for regional play.
In addition to Shupe and Workman, the Gladiators’ Britt Failes qualified with an 89. Joining them were Luray’s Brian Giles (89), Page County’s Bryan Vandanna (90) and Buffalo Gap’s Jeremy Swiney (90).
